CEO Karno Tenovuo: Before founding Awake.AI, Karno was leading the Rolls-Royce Ship Intelligence business known for the world's first remote control and autonomous ships. Software team includes the three co-founders: leading platform product management (Simo Salminen), SW engineering (Kimmo Kummala) and AI development (Dr. Jussi Poikonen). All the co-founder worked also at Rolls-Royce together.
More than 90% of the world’s goods transport is handled by sea. Currently ships are waiting about 40% of their time in ports, they sail about 40% empty and emissions need to be reduced by more than 40%. This is because before now the industry has been working in silos, all processes have been manual and actors have only known about 24 hours forward what will be the ports status. When changes happen, they have not been efficiently communicated. The whole industry is lacking a solution that would give reliable situational awareness and planning capability past 1-2 days. There are time consuming manual data entry, sharing and errors, re-entries and hardly any digital documents. Old, limited and siloed tools are used for manual planning and they are not linked to other systems. Planning is based on guessing or interpolation at best. Shipping emissions have risen since 1990 by about 26M tonnes of CO2, or 19%, reaching 139M tonnes in 2018 – and equaling to a quarter of Europe’s car fleet.
