Expansion of Abalone Hatchery Capacity

Sustainable cultivation of abalone and seaweed

Company behind project
Mungo Murphy's Seaweed Co. Limited

Ireland

Problem we are solving
We are sustainably producing highly nutritious seafood products in a land based RAS farm and are seeking to expand our production capacity to fill out our own farm and to supply seed and spat to other farms to grow the industry. Abalone haliotis discus hannai can live in a broad temperature range which is important as we observe warming seawater temperatures. Seaweed stores carbon and in feeding it to abalone, the abalone shell sequesters carbon which helps to drawdown CO2 from the environment.

Sustainable Impact on Blue Ecconomy
Ours is the only farm in Europe producing the Abalone species Haliotis Discus Hannai. Abalone is increasingly endangered worldwide due to overharvesting and environmental changes. It is the only land based marine RAS farm in Ireland.
