CyanoCare
Rita Mota is Post-Doc Researcher in Bioengineering & Synthetic Microbiology (BSM) Group at i3S/IBMC-Institute for Research & Innovation in Health/Institute for Molecular & Cell Biology, Univ. Porto, Portugal. RM holds a PhD in Biology (2017) from Faculty of Sciences, Univ. Porto (FCUP), with some periods in Univ. Florence, Italy. RM is specialized in cyanobacterial extracellular polymers, studying its characteristics, biosynthesis, production optimization and possible novel applications. As CyanoCare project manager, RM attended to acceleration programs (ex. ClimateLaunchpad 2018, EIT-Climate), and won awards (ex. Born From Knowledge Award, National Innovation Agency-ANI). Jorge Cardoso is Research Fellow in BSM Group at i3S/IBMC. JC holds a MSc in Bioengineering (Molecular Biotechnology) from Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) and Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), Univ. Porto (2018). JC is specialized in the cultivation of cyanobacteria and in the biopolymer extraction.
Synthetic-based components have become increasingly unwelcomed in cosmetics due to public awareness of their long-term health problems, creating great pressure for industry to shift to natural, safer and environmentally friendly ingredients. CyanoCare aims to develop natural-based added-value products for the personal care industry derived from cyanobacteria. Cyanoflan, a carbohydrate polymer, is naturally produced in large quantities by a marine cyanobacterium. It can be used in a wide variety of cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, namely as a rheology modifier (thickener; emulsifier; stabilizer), while being able to provide protection to the skin against insults. Performance tests show potential for its use both as excipient and as active ingredient. The incorporation of natural, renewable and sustainable raw materials such as Cyanoflan into commodities and premium products of personal care industries will allow to reach the booming market of environmentally conscious consumers
Our value proposition is to enable cosmetics brands to differentiate through natural, safer, and environmentally conscious ingredients. This will be performed mainly by a biopolymer easy to produce and isolate, and with versatile natural properties.
