AlongRoute

AlongRoute comes to revolutionize the way marine forecasts are produced by surrogating conventional numerical modeling with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, for use within the cargo shipping industry. At this stage, the solution already provides reliable forecasts for the Mediterranean Sea and its scope is to aid in vessel management operations such as route optimization for lowering the risk of damage to vessels, cargo, and crews, as well as for maximizing fuel efficiency within the constraints of the planned arrival time. The core innovation lies in the utilization of AI techniques which leverage the “knowledge” that lies within reanalysis data and allow for better accuracy without any physical modeling, especially during rough weather at sea.

Problem we are solving
Maritime transport is a major source of emissions, and strict climate regulations are forcing stakeholders to respond. They are now actively seeking solutions that can reduce blue GHG emissions. One of the most promising groups of solutions is weather-based ship routing systems, which suggest optimal routes for ships to keep their fuel consumption low. However, experience shows that these systems do not work as expected. The problem is not with the routing itself, but with the marine weather forecasts they use as input. Unfortunately, the existing forecast data is not accurate enough and this causes the routing systems to perform poorly.

Sustainable Impact on Blue Ecconomy
Weather-based ship routing has been used to minimise fuel consumption and emissions, but its accuracy critically depends on the quality of the marine weather forecasts on which it is based; existing forecasting models cannot accurately predict the complex behaviour of the ocean. We are developing advanced AI models that learn how the physics of the ocean work. This allows us to make highly accurate forecasts of ocean parameters such as waves, currents, and surface winds. Using our forecasts as input, existing weather ship routing systems can perform up to 1.3 times better than before, leading to a significant reduction in emissions.
