X1 Wind

X1 Wind is developing a disruptive floating system to change the paradigm of the wind energy industry.
Unlike other solutions, which use “marinized” onshore wind turbines on the top of adapted oil and gas
platforms designs, we have designed an integrated system to take advantage of the offshore
environment, resulting in a cost competitive concept. Our technology has been proven, and a prototype
will be in waters of the Canary Islands by beginning of 2021 (reaching TRL 7). We are now accelerating to
prepare a commercial pilot unit (reaching TRL 9) with partners and investors willing to bring a disruptive
technology to the market, that will make floating offshore wind cost competitive

About Us
Alex Raventos: CEO and Co-founder - Alex has more than 10 years of experience in the development of
offshore renewable energy projects since 2008, having held different position of responsibility in
companies like Bluewater, WavEC and Abencis, and founded Inn2Grid consultancy firm prior to co-
founding X1 Wind. Carlos Casanovas: CTO and co-founder - Mechanical engineer from MIT (where he
developed X1 Wind concept). Brings his critical 10 years of experience in the design of offshore wind
turbines for companies like Adwen Offshore (Siemens Gamesa) and Alstom. He also has experience in
the development of floating wind for Bluewater, a leading supplier in the offshore industry. Santiago
Canedo: Senior Mech. Engineer. Brings over 17 years of experience. The two co-founders have been able
to build a team of 12 excellent professionals coming from large companies like GE, ABB, Rolls Royce,
Veolia or Altran to join this venture.

Problem we are solving
Marine renewable energy can present a great opportunity to a green recovery, given the coronavirus pandemic negative affect on the blue economy (tourism, fisheries, aquaculture). X1 Wind believes that floating offshore wind can contribute to this green recovery by providing an innovative, cost effective floating concept, with environmentally friendly mooring system. This would increase the activities related to port and shipyards on the coast regions. Since X1 Wind’s unique design allows for simple and cheap installation procedures (compared to the expensive heavy-lift vessels used by competitors), where local vessels and infrastructure can be utilised, contributing to local job creations.

Sustainable Impact on Blue Ecconomy
The floating wind industry is currently facing several challenges to become commercially competitive. Current platform designs (e.g., spar and semi-submersible) require large mass causing high CAPEX and use of catenary mooring systems, which are expensive and cause large environmental footprints on the seabed, and tend to have complex & expensive installation & maintenance processes.
X1 Wind offers disruptive innovative solutions that solves these problems by reducing the weight (by 80-25%) compare to current floating platforms, by introducing PivotBuoy (a TLP single point mooring system) that allows the platform to orientate itself passively with the wind, which results in a more efficient design. The PivotBuoy system requires less moorings and space on the seabed, hence substantially reducing the impact in the underwater and seabed environment. The PivotBuoy system also provides easier, faster, cheaper installation and can be pre-installed at port before being towed to site. X1 Wind aims to contribute to the goals of reaching climate neutrality."
