Symphony Wave Power Operating B.V.
Sander Poppes (CEO)
Certified Public Accountant (2011) with extensive leadership experience in finance, operations, and business development. Sander began his career in auditing at BDO and RSM, working with international family-owned businesses. He then held executive roles in marketing and agri-tech sectors, where he drove operational and financial performance. At Kraakman B.V., a large John Deere dealer, he led multiple acquisitions, scaling the company from €30M to €170M in revenue in 2 years. As an interim CFO, Sander specialized in turnarounds and distressed companies, managing stakeholder alignment and strategic recovery. Now as CEO of SWP, he brings the financial discipline, commercial insight, and execution capability needed to scale a deep-tech venture in a capital-intensive market.
Fred Gardner (Founder & Non-Executive Director)
A pioneering figure in wave energy, Fred holds dual degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and has founded several successful ventures in renewable energy, including the Archimedes Wave Swing and Tocardo Tidal Energy. He has served as Director of Teamwork Technology since 1993 and as Professor of Sustainable Energy at InHolland University since 2015. With over three decades in marine energy and participation in EU RTD programs like WETFEET and EquiMar, Fred has shaped both technology and policy landscapes in the sector. He is the conceptual and technical architect of SWP’s core innovations and continues to guide high-level decisions while mentoring the next generation of innovators.
Bas Vosbergen (Chief Technology Officer)
Bas combines a background in mechanical and civil engineering with over 15 years of experience in marine energy systems. He was instrumental in developing Tocardo’s turbine range (100kW to 1.2MW) and oversaw design, deployment, and commissioning of several offshore installations, including the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. His strength lies in turning complex engineering concepts into robust, field-ready systems. At SWP, Bas leads all engineering work, with a focus on maintainability, reliability, and scaling the product for both North Sea and ocean markets.
Nico Lommers (Lead Production Engineer)
Nico brings over 30 years of experience in high-precision industrial manufacturing. As former owner of a major Dutch machining firm, he supplied components to industries including aerospace and offshore. At Tocardo International BV, he led procurement, production, and quality control, successfully delivering TRL9 tidal power installations. Nico now oversees SWP's production strategy, supplier management, and quality assurance — ensuring manufacturing readiness and scalability for market deployment.
Kasper van Tulder (Product Physicist)
Kasper holds a BSc in Physics and Astronomy and an MSc in Computational Science, and is currently completing a second master’s in Mechanical Engineering (TU Delft). At SWP, he leads system modeling and optimization, using advanced control strategies to maximize energy output and system efficiency. His expertise bridges physics, simulation, and mechanical systems, playing a pivotal role in reducing LCoE and increasing system intelligence — both critical for long-term competitiveness.
The demand for renewable energy is increasing, driven in part by the Paris Agreement (2019). This creates the need for an alternative to fossil energy production, both for general energy supply and specific industries. This energy must be generated in an affordable and scalable way, while also being space-efficient.
Wave energy is a vast source of power that remains untapped. It is a reliable, predictable, and constant form of energy supply.
The SWP system is characterized by its simplicity and robustness, making it low-maintenance. In addition, the system is located underwater and is easily scalable. This makes it competitive with wind and solar energy in the long term.
